Leaving Certificate
There are three programmes available in Desmond College at Leaving Certificate Level:
1. The traditional Leaving Certificate.
2. The Leaving Certificate Vocational programme is the same as the traditional Leaving Certificate, but with an added dimension. Students take an extra subject which helps to develop their potential in areas of Enterprise, innovation and Work Experience. This extra subject is recognised by the Universities and Institutions of Technology for points purposes.
3. Leaving Certificate Applied:
Desmond College undertook this new venture for the first time in September 2001. This programme aims to develop the personal, social and vocational skills and to prepare students for the transition from school to adult and working life. The programme which is of 2 years duration has three main elements;
(a) Vocational Preparation
(b) Vocational Education
(c) General Education
Two thirds of the work is based on modules and assessment.
This programme is a very suitable option for students who wish to follow a more practical course, as it is based on the educational tasks at school, in the work place, in the community, as well as continual assessment.
At the end of 2 years, students are awarded a certificate based on credits accumulated. They then have the option of going directly into employment, or the L.C.A. also provides access to most apprenticeships and Post Leaving Cert. Courses.
